Deployment of FLORES Machine Translation to Sorani / Central Kurdish Wikipedia

The WMF Language team plans to introduce a machine translation (MT) support for the Content Translation in Sorani / Central Kurdish Wikipedia called FLORES. This means that you can choose to use FLORES machine translation when translating Wikipedia articles to Sorani/Central Kurdish using the Content Translation tool

The FLORES Machine Translation is provided by an AI research team at Meta through a free for use API key that allows the Content Translation to access the service on the FLORES server for an evaluation trial period. This MT will be set as default in your Wikipedia, but you can choose not to use it by selecting "Start with empty paragraph" from the "Initial Translation" dropdown menu

The Wikimedia Foundation has worked out an agreement that allows the use of FLORES without compromising Wikipedia’s policies about attribution of rights, your privacy as a user, and brand representation. You can find more information about the FLORES Machine translation on this page

Please note that the use of the FLORES MT is not compulsory. However, we would want your community to

• use it once it is deployed to improve the quality of the Machine Translation service

• provide feedback about our plans, its quality once deployed and ask any questions you might have about this addition

I'm so sorry for the late reply! We are so glad to see this message if the FLORES MT feature is comfortable with our language. I have some questions for now:

1. Does this feature have any prior experience or is it new?
2. How accurate is this MT and does it guarantee a good translation?
3. Is it available on any Wikimedia projects, for example test.wikipedia.org, or any other place for us to test the feature before?
4. Can I see some examples of it's works? If it is available in screenshots, it is better.

Thank you for your questions and feedback. I have tried to provide answers to them below

The FLORES provides Machine Translation (MT) support to six languages in Wikipedia (Chinese, Occitan, Luganda, Zulu, Igbo and Icelandic). So, I will say it has experience Regarding accuracy, I would say that we have not received any complaints from any Wikipedia communities they provide MT support. I will add that it is the default MT for Icelandic Wikipedia based on request. I will also add that Initial translations can not be published without modifying them; one can also decide to still use the "blank" option . The Initial translation are more like a guide to efficiently translating articles The test instance is not public; they are mainly for the team engineers. However, I have shared with you (through email) a spreadsheet of FLORES MT samples

In my opinion, it is an important point that you cannot publish the translation directly without modifying because (in my opinion) initial translation without modifying often produces a low quality result. Now, I want to get the opinion of the other administrators and users on this feature.

i believe that it's a great tool which helps our community to improve and grow better, and i reviewed some examples which mr.aram provided through excel sheet, the quality is good and understandable, however i agree with Aram to ensure better quality and accuracy i should say that it's our responsibility to check the quality before publishing the article, needless to say some of our new users use other translation tools to create new articles anyway; so if the Flores Machine is Accurate enough let's have it thanks for the offer. 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (لێدوان) ‏٢١:٥٢، ٨ی حوزەیرانی ٢٠٢٢ (UTC)

The machine translation engines are not very good for Central Kurdish yet, but I think this tools helping users If they use them carefully. Thank you, ئارام, سەرچیا, for your feedback, we will go ahead and start the process to enable the FLORES after integrating the new languages from FLORES, we will explore the integration of Google translate. We recommend that your community try both (FLORES and GOOGLE when enabled), compare, and let us know the one preferred as default. Please note that there could be differences in personal preferences, so the Machine translation perceived as more useful is kept as default while the other is optional.

I will recommend testing these in context since the experience may differ slightly. For example, Google Translate has a bug which results in extra spaces when translating HTML content (which may not be expected if you look at the Google Translate website).

I hope the above is clear enough. We will inform you once the MTs are enabled in your Wikipedia.

Please remember that the FLORES machine translation is set as default in your Wikipedia. Enabling Content and Section translation tool in Central Kurdish Wikipedia

Below is background information about the tools and how you can test the Section translation tool.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. However, the tool is not out of beta in Central Kurdish Wikipedia, limiting the discoverability of the tool and its use and blocking the enablement of the Section translation in your Wikipedia

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

• Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones
• Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device

We plan to enable the tools on Central Kurdish Wikipedia in the coming week if there are no objections from your community. After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tools and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have as a reply to this message or on the project talk page

Try the Section translation tool

Before the enablement, you can try the current implementation of the tool in our testing instance. Once it is enabled on Central Kurdish Wikipedia, you’ll have access to https://ckb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation with your mobile device. You can select an article to translate, and machine translation will be provided as a starting point for editors to improve.

Content and Section Translation tool enabled in Central Kurdish Wikipedia

The WMF Language team is pleased to let you know that we have enabled the Section translation and Content translation tools in Central Kurdish Wikipedia.

The Content translation tool can be discovered by users through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation can disable it from their preferences. Also, with the Section translation tool, you can start translating an article on your mobile device right when you notice it is missing in Central Kurdish. From a Wikipedia article in any language, switch languages and search for Central Kurdish. If the article does not exist, an option to translate it will appear, as shown in the image below.

We know that these tools will help translators in your community to add content using any device with ease. Content created with the Content and Section Translation tool will be marked with the "[١]" and “sectiontranslaiton” tag, respectively, for the community to review. We’ll monitor the content created, but we are very interested in hearing about your experience using the tools and reviewing the content created with it.

Hi @UOzurumba (WMF):, it's OK and I often reply late. :) I tried it now and it worked, but when you announced that the section translation had been added, I tried it and it didn't work. Anyway, it works now and I thank you very much for coming to the problem. However, in Content Translation, we have a problem with Google Translate that translates texts into Northern Kurdish (en:Kurmanci, ku), not Central Kurdish (en:Sorani, ckb). Community members in the 2022 Board of Trustees election are invited to propose statements to use in the Election Compass.

An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.

Here is the timeline for the Election Compass

• July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
• July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
• July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements
• August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
• August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
• August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision

The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August. The Elections Committee will oversee the process, supported by the Movement Strategy and Governance team. MSG will check that the questions are clear, there are no duplicates, no typos, and so on.
